主なプロジェクトに『sun and escape』(大阪築港赤レンガ倉庫、2005)、『round trip+EM#3』(Sónar - MACBA、2006)、『Sony Tablet Two Will』(2011)、DVD『viewKoma2』(2011)、『speed switching』(2011、NTTインターコミュニケーションセンター)など。

“Boombox-Mellotron Project”
A Sound Live Tokyo Fringe program
Produced by VACANT

The Mellotron is an instrument that was invented in the 1950s and has been admired by musicians and used for a number of songs. We produce the “Boombox-Mellotron Project,” where a home electrical appliance collector Junichi Matsuzaki (Design Underground) and a gadget developer Kobayashi Radio reinterpret the structure of the Mellotron, a tape replay organ. They construct “Boombox-Mellotron” of which keyboards control multiple boomboxes, and an artist / engineer Kanta Horio creates a sound installation where the Boombox-Mellotron is introduced to the public for the first time. We also present a special live Boombox-Mellotron performance featuring a special guest artist Takako Minekawa.

Junichi Matsuzaki
Home electrical appliance collector and the representatative of Design Underground. Since 2003, based in Adachi Ward, Tokyo, he has been collecting, maintaining and customizing Japanese and foreign modern home electrical appliances, mainly boomboxes, and also organizes events using home electronics and exhibitions using boomboxes. Among his publications are a photobook Japanese Old Boombox Design Catalog (Seigensha, 2009), of which DVD version has been released from Universal Music Japan, and Made in Japan no Design! 70s Analog Home Electronics Catalog (Seigensha, 2013).

Kobayashi Radio
An electric avant-garde group established in Yokohama in 1991. Currently based in Shibuya, they design and produce technology-crossover gadgets and work as technical engineers for events and projects. The gadgets that they use are diverse — buzzers, microcomputer boards, disposable chopsticks, iron construction materials, rubber bands and internal combustion engines — and designed not only for music and video but also for unprecedented usages.

Kanta Horio
An artist / engineer that creates devices to convert various forms of energies, such as sound, light, movements and positions, between each other for live performances and exhibitions. He also takes part in commercial projects of exhibitions, moving images and prototyping as an electrical device engineer. Among his projects are sun and escape (Chikko Red Brick Warehouse in Osaka, 2005), round trip+EM#3 (Sónar - MACBA, 2006), “Sony Tablet Two Will” (2011), viewKoma2 (DVD, 2011) and speed switching (NTT InterCommunication Center, 2011).

Takako Minekawa
Debuted in 1995 with CHAT CHAT, and has released eight albums including Maxi On in Japan and internationally. After taking part in several compilation discs such as Tribute to Haruomi Hosono in which she covered the theme of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind with Ryuichi Sakamoto and PENGUIN CAFE ORCHESTRA -tribute-, she released the first album in 13 years Toropical Circle, a collaboration with Dustin Wong, the ex-guitarist of PONYTAIL.
